Spinal complaints are steadily increasing in the ageing population. But most pains limit themselves and do not require medical treatment. Only with longer-lasting complaints, acute pain or neurological failures is a more exact evaluation by a specialist is necessary.
A thorough history and careful assessment in combination with adequate imaging are the foundation for the correct diagnosis.
The majority of diseases of the spine can be treated conservatively; rarely is surgical care needed; this should always be the last resort of choice.
If surgery is unavoidable, most procedures today are minimally invasive and therefore very tissue-friendly, to ensure rapid and painless mobilisation and timely discharge home.
