Dr. med. Volk specialises in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, in particular the treatment of fractures, joint problems and tendon/ligament/meniscal injuries. The procedures are carried out as far as possible with a minimally invasive or arthroscopic method. The bone fracture treatment uses state-of-the-art, usually angle-stable, titanium implants. An OR team is ready in the event of an emergency in the shortest possible time. Less urgent cases will be considered at short notice in the OP programme.

The emergency surgery/orthopaedic emergency department ensures readiness for urgent cases almost around the clock. Specialist care, a modern X-ray system and ultrasound are available on the weekends as well.

Dr. med. Steffen Thier has been in the emergency department at ATOS Clinic since 01/04/16.

As a former competitive athlete and long-time supporter of the national rugby  team, his special focus is on the treatment of sports injuries.

He specialises in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, in particular the treatment of cartilage damage, joint problems and tendon/ligament/meniscal injury. The procedures are carried out as far as possible with a minimally invasive or arthroscopic method.

His scientific focus is on the arthroscopic treatment of cartilage damage in the knee and hip joints.

Dr. Thier is married and lives in Heidelberg. In addition to his extensive professional involvement, he is interested sports activities such as jogging, mountain biking, rugby, cross-fit and tennis.

At the centre of orthopaedic and sports trauma surgery surgery is the surgical treatment of the hip, knee and ankle as well as tendon and muscle injuries. All sports-orthopaedic and sports trauma surgery issues, such as the assessment of fitness for sports, especially after injuries of the entire musculoskeletal system or after a joint replacement, are supervised by Prof. Schmitt.

In general, all sports-orthopaedic problems, including children and adolescents are treated in the practice. Naturally, the majority of patients come from the field of competitive and recreational sports.

  • Hip joint: Hip joint arthroscopy (no joint replacement)
  • Knee joint: All procedures including endoprosthetics (i.e. meniscal and cartilage surgery (all common procedures), cruciate ligament replacement (anterior and posterior), patellar problems, varus and valgus deformities, i.e. remodelling osteotomies, partial replacement (carriage prosthesis medial and lateral) and total replacement of the knee joint)

Abrasions (arthrosis) of the large joints are among the most common causes of treatment in our health system. An advanced, severe osteoarthritis with severe pain in motion usually makes the implantation of an artificial joint inevitable, in order to restore the quality of life of those affected.
The durability, function, freedom from pain and patient satisfaction depend crucially on the surgical quality and care, optimal and individual preparation and follow-up of the procedure as well as the use of proven techniques and implants. Artificial joints should always be implanted as accurately, stably and gently as possible. Furthermore, a basic principle is to preserve the anatomy of the natural joint as far as possible and, whenever medically reasonable to perform the smallest surgical intervention.

Since my medical studies, my medical interest has been in the ankle and knee. I started my doctoral thesis in 1998 at ATOS Clinic on the topic of treatment of cartilage damage. Over the years, cartilage damage, the kneecap, and arthrosis have always been the focus of my scientific and clinical work. The topic of my habilitation thesis for appointment as a lecturer at the Hanover Medical School in 2013 was mini-implants as partial joint replacement in knee arthroplasty.

The medical goal of the HKF Centre at ATOS Clinic is to specialise in the treatment of diseases of the various joint areas. This includes the treatment of sports injuries in recreational and competitive athletes, long-term consequences of injuries and osteoarthritis.

Through specialisation, I have gained a wealth of experience as a surgeon and diagnostician over the years. State-of-the-art, minimally invasive surgical techniques and short hospital stays are guaranteed. The quality of the results is ensured through constant evaluation and monitoring of the results and continuous scientific exchange of experiences.

Dr. med. Jürgen Walpert is a specialist in orthopaedics  and trauma surgery. In addition to the wide range of sports medicine with the treatment of the knee joint, his special interest lies in the field of foot surgery. Dr. Walpert is one of the first certified foot surgeons of the scientific society, the German Association for Foot Surgery (DAF), and has been a member of the extended board of the association since 2002.


In 1998, he received the first “European Travel Fellowship”, with the opportunity to observe international specialist colleagues over several weeks.

For years, Dr. Walpert has regularly participated in national and international exchanges in his area of expertise, published on various topics in specialist journals and has lively lecturing experience in front of national and international audiences. Dr. Walpert has worked on various textbooks, is a member of national and international trade associations and also one of the few German foot specialists who are a member of the American foot society AOFAS.
