Dr. med. Steffen Thier has been in the emergency department at ATOS Clinic since 01/04/16.

As a former competitive athlete and long-time supporter of the national rugby  team, his special focus is on the treatment of sports injuries.

He specialises in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, in particular the treatment of cartilage damage, joint problems and tendon/ligament/meniscal injury. The procedures are carried out as far as possible with a minimally invasive or arthroscopic method.

His scientific focus is on the arthroscopic treatment of cartilage damage in the knee and hip joints.

At the centre of orthopaedic and sports trauma surgery surgery is the surgical treatment of the hip, knee and ankle as well as tendon and muscle injuries. All sports-orthopaedic and sports trauma surgery issues, such as the assessment of fitness for sports, especially after injuries of the entire musculoskeletal system or after a joint replacement, are supervised by Prof. Schmitt.

In general, all sports-orthopaedic problems, including children and adolescents are treated in the practice. Naturally, the majority of patients come from the field of competitive and recreational sports.

  • Hip joint: Hip joint arthroscopy (no joint replacement)

Abrasions (arthrosis) of the large joints are among the most common causes of treatment in our health system. An advanced, severe osteoarthritis with severe pain in motion usually makes the implantation of an artificial joint inevitable, in order to restore the quality of life of those affected.
The durability, function, freedom from pain and patient satisfaction depend crucially on the surgical quality and care, optimal and individual preparation and follow-up of the procedure as well as the use of proven techniques and implants. Artificial joints should always be implanted as accurately, stably and gently as possible. Dr. Erhan Basad focuses on joint-preserving and arthroscopic surgery of the knee, shoulder and ankle. His other areas of focus include leg-axis corrections on the knee joint and endoprosthetics of the knee and hip joints. As a regionally exclusive provider, he relies on personalised knee joint implants – custom made for the patient. Dr. Basad personally carries out over 700 outpatient and inpatient operations per year. Joint preservation through biological-regenerative (cartilage surgery) and axis-correcting measures is at the forefront of his work. With fresh sports injuries, structure-preserving surgeries (e.g. meniscal suture, healing response, cartilage surgery) and ligament grafts (e.g. cruciate ligament surgery) are used. Since 2006, Dr. Basad has appeared in the FOCUS list of doctors “Top Doctors/ Orthopaedics” as a knee specialist. The research focus of his university habilitation was in the field of cartilage cell transplantation. He continues his university teaching as a lecturer at Goethe University Frankfurt and Justus Liebig University Giessen. Dr. Basad is the author of numerous scientific publications and an active member of national and international scientific societies and committees. PD Dr. med. Patrick Weber is a renowned specialist in the field of implantation and revision of hip and knee endoprostheses. Through his many years as Head of Hip Arthroplasty and Deputy Head of Knee Arthroplasty at the University of Munich (LMU, Klinikum Großhadern), he has covered the entire field of endoprosthetics even in complex cases of hip dysplasia or post-traumatic arthrosis. Chief physician for hip surgery and knee arthroplasty

Prof. Gollwitzer is a renowned specialist in the implantation of artificial hip and knee prostheses as well as the entire spectrum of modern joint-preserving hip surgery.
The focus of his clinical and operative activities are the treatment of osteoarthritis of the hip and knee joint, hip joint arthroscopy (hip flexion), minimally invasive and muscle-sparing hip arthroplasty using AMIS technology, and the individualised partial and complete replacement of the knee joint.
