After studying in Bonn and Montpellier and training stations in Bonn and Erlangen, I came to Heidelberg in 2004. I have been working in the field of orthopaedics and trauma surgery for more than 20 years, focusing on spine therapy; since 1998 I have done conservative treatment and have been operating for more than 15 years. For more than ten years, I have worked as Head Senior Physician, Section Head, and Chief Physician of specialised spine departments. I represent the entire spectrum of spine surgery from minimally invasive surgery to complex deformities. The treatment of deformities (scoliosis and kyphosis) in children, adolescents and adults has always been a major focus of my work apart from the treatment of wear-related illnesses. Careful paediatric and neuro-orthopaedic training and enthusiasm for working with patients and the social environment motivate me.

Training activities in continuing medical education are very important to me. As a speaker, instructor and organiser of continuing education courses of the DWG, the DGOOC and other institutions, I am active on a regular basis and am in constant technical exchange with national and international specialists in spine surgery.

Careful clarification of the symptoms before starting a treatment is very important to me. Thus, together with patients and, if necessary, the parent or guardian the best individual therapy can be developed. This is often possible without surgery.

  • Surgical and non-surgical treatment of wear-related disorders such as herniated discs, spinal canal gene, vertebral joints and total spinal instability
  • Surgical and non-surgical treatment of local deformities such as spondylolisthesis
  • Surgical and non-surgical treatment of spinal curvatures (scoliosis and kyphosis) of childhood, adolescence and adulthood, including wear-related curvatures
  • Surgical and non-surgical treatments of the ageing spine and especially osteoporotic changes

The careful planning of interventions has the highest priority. We use state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging equipment adapted to the needs. The greatest possible reduction in radiation exposure, with a clear increase in quality and more information for the patient, is at the centre of our attention here. That is why we use a state-of-the-art and innovative special X-ray device, the EOS. Its pictures are extremely suitable for therapy planning. This diagnosis equipment which is rare (only 12 locations in Germany) is able to reduce the required radiation dose by up to 90% compared to the current standard diagnostics. If required, this diagnostic is flanked by radiation-free imaging with MRI. If there are specific questions about the bone structure or the vessel situation, a CT may be added.

Surgically, the following techniques are used:

  • Microscopically assisted movement-preserving minimally invasive removal of herniated discs (nucleotomy), expansions of the spinal canal (decompression) and the nerve root pockets (foraminotomy)
  • If necessary, minimally invasive stabilisation (spondylodesis) of vertebral segments at the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine with screw-rod systems and cages via access from the back, the flank or from the front.
  • Movement-preserving implants (disc prostheses for disc wear
  • Complex rectifying and stabilising corrections of spinal deformities (scoliosis and kyphosis) using screw-rod systems and intraoperative neuromonitoring (monitoring of nerve functions).
  • Many years of surgical experience, state-of-the-art intraoperative navigation and the best imaging are of course available for additional patient safety.

Dr. med. Volk specialises in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, in particular the treatment of fractures, joint problems and tendon/ligament/meniscal injuries. The procedures are carried out as far as possible with a minimally invasive or arthroscopic method. The bone fracture treatment uses state-of-the-art, usually angle-stable, titanium implants. Dr. med. Steffen Thier has been in the emergency department at ATOS Clinic since 01/04/16.

As a former competitive athlete and long-time supporter of the national rugby  team, his special focus is on the treatment of sports injuries.

At the centre of orthopaedic and sports trauma surgery surgery is the surgical treatment of the hip, knee and ankle as well as tendon and muscle injuries. All sports-orthopaedic and sports trauma surgery issues, such as the assessment of fitness for sports, especially after injuries of the entire musculoskeletal system or after a joint replacement, are supervised by Prof. Schmitt.

In general, all sports-orthopaedic problems, including children and adolescents are treated in the practice. Naturally, the majority of patients come from the field of competitive and recreational sports.

  • Hip joint: Hip joint arthroscopy (no joint replacement)

For over 25 years I have been focusing on injuries, injury consequences and wear changes to the shoulder and elbow joint.

Since 1999, I have been involved exclusively in shoulder and elbow joint surgery.

Inspired and guided by my practice partner Prof. Dr. med. P. Habermeyer, I have learned the entire spectrum of shoulder surgery from the ground up and deepened my understanding of it through practical experience.

The ability to perform many different arthroscopic procedures especially motivates me to work on improvements to the instruments and on new techniques. This led to the publication of the Shoulder Arthroscopy Atlas in 2008. However, surgical techniques have to withstand the critical review of their effectiveness and benefit to the patient, so scientific evaluation is also a major concern in my work. Together with Prof. Dr. med. Habermeyer, Dr. med. Andreas Klonz opened the emergency room at ATOS Clinic in 2005, which over the years has become one of the largest practices at ATOS Clinic:

SPORTS SURGERY HEIDELBERG. The department is now much more than just an emergency room.

Since 2000 Dr. Klonz has in particular carried out operations on the shoulder and elbow. In this area, his focus is on his own scientific work, as well as continuous training in and further development of specialised treatments.

Dr. Klonz specialises in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, particularly bone fractures, tendon tears and ligament injuries.

A special focus is the treatment of sports injuries – for example, cruciate ligament and meniscus tears. From 2008 to 2013 he was the team doctor of the Handball Bundesliga team of the Rhein-Neckar-Löwen.  During this time, he also acted as a replacement physician for the Adler Mannheim ice hockey players.

Many national rugby players, Bundesliga players, as well as youth players and their parents have relied on Dr. Klonz.

Dr. Klonz is married and is the father of 2 boys. During his adolescence and studies, he played high-level handball, as well as football and tennis. Today he keeps fit with mountain biking, skiing and fitness training.

Dr. Klonz was awarded in 2017 and 2018 with the recommendation seal of Focus magazine as an ‘Orthopaedic Surgeon’.

Since 2017 he is chairman of the commission for quality assurance in arthroscopy at KVBW.
